FASA's old BattleTech line was a standby for miniatures gaming for a long time, and the series branched off into computer gaming fairly early. The first games were pretty ugly, hard to play things... and then came MechWarrior 2, which pushed the limits of graphics and made large robot games come into their own.  Later on, the line branched, and the strategy idea came back in Microprose's less than stellar MechCommander.  Despite this, however, Microsoft's acquisition of the rights to FASA titles has resulted in a great sequel -- MC2 gives players just about everything a Mech game needs.
