Racing games are one of the older forms of video gaming, having evolved from basic 2d top-down models, through pseudo-3d games like the venerably Pole Position series, and today have reached a point where many claim that they were "solved", that only the graphics would get better.

Of course, that didn't happen. A few years ago we saw Crazy Taxi and other goal-based, instead of simple time-based, games hit the market. The Midtown Madness series is one of these, choosing to eschew the safety of the racetrack in exchange for danger-filled and multi-pathed areas inside well-known cities.

The trick? Creating a racing game that's fun, and easy to pick up, while still retaining enough of a challenge. The controls need to be simple enough to use, and not so twitchy that screwups are commonplace, while the gameplay invites players to keep going. Did they succeed?
