Console fighting games are a way of life -- companies put them out in hopes of scoring a hit, sometimes succeeding, sometimes not. Before releasing X-Men: Next Dimension, Activision tried two previous X-men fighting games. These were the ill-fated Mutant Academy series. Plagued by slow controls, a dodgy control scheme, and A.I. difficulty, as well as the Playstation's aging 3D power, they weren't that well received.

There is, however, an old expression about the third time being the charm -- and with their third X-men fighting game, Activision finally has a good fighting system to work with.
