In the land of beat-em-up fighters, Guilty Gear has always been a "sleeper" series. Good gameplay, solid ideas, and well constructed characters and sound made the games impressive, but somehow the catching power of Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and Soul Calibur eluded Sammy Studios' prime fighting title.

In an attempt to combat this, the designers took the game back to formula with Guilty Gear Isuka. While favorite characters and moves remained, underlying assumptions - like the 2D fighting area and the two-player limit in battles - were thrown out. The result isn't perfect by any means; far from it. And of course it retains the usual difficulty level, hard to the point of frustration.

It's a game that players will either love or hate passionately, but nobody can walk away from without feelings one way or the other.
