Real-time strategy games are a genre that many people feel have gotten stale - after all, some of the heaviest played even today are the venerable Starcraft and Warcraft II, while recent offerings by other companies have languished.

The Total War series is one that I felt was a niche market; previous titles felt like your basic RTS, with the only change being that units were, instead of single units, multiple-person squadrons acting as one. It was an interesting idea, but felt more like a cheat... get around having hard-coded limits on the number of limits in play and make more "cinematic" battles by combining the AI of a given number of troops into one clickable unit. Graphically they were brilliant; gameplay-wise, they weren't. Shogun: Total War and Medieval: Total War combined a turn-based strategy game (akin to Risk) with an RTS engine for the battles.

Rome: Total War continues in the line, but feels more like you're playing Civilization than Risk. Cities can go into trouble of their own accord and must be maintained and even improved; political events change the timeline and unlock your technology trees. It's a brilliant game, well worth playing.
