Every now and again, a game comes along that is very difficult to give a score to. You can play with numbers, try to analyze it on individual merits, toy around with the effects and controls and everything else, and still not have any idea whether your idea of how the gameplay works will translate into whether other people will like it or not.

Assassin's Creed is one of those games.

When I first sat down to play, I figured I had a good idea of what I was getting into - a game something like older gems that allowed stealth gameplay. Venerable titles like Hitman, Thief, Deus Ex, and Tenchu sprang easily to mind. What I got was not entirely that, nor is it entirely anything else; it takes definite stealth elements, but it performs its stealth very much in broad daylight. While I've given it a score, please feel perfectly free to ignore that, and instead read on if you want to decide whether or not you'll like the game.
