In the world of superhero games, Batman's always had a checkered past. There are stellar, well-regarded titles from the NES days, rather poor beat-em-ups, movie tie-in titles, appearances in mediocre Justice League fighting games... and then Eidos and Rocksteady had to go and give us Batman: Arkham Asylum.

In this one respect they have succeeded; they have produced a title that blends the Batman of the comic book and movie world almost seamlessly, brings back some of the best voice actors to play the parts (much of the cast of the Batman animated series, including Mark Hamill as the Joker), and offers gamers the chance to step into the role flawlessly. Sneak areas, beat-em-up, subterfuge, strategy... it's all there.

For a time when the video game industry's had its troubles, Batman: Arkham Asylum is a breath of fresh air.
