Sound systems at one point weren't much of a care; users took any old card, hooked them up to mediocre PC speakers, and that was that. Then PC speakers got better, and along with DVDs and multiple point surround sound systems came sound cards capable of handling them.  Still, a new sound card is one of the lowest things on any user's wish list, because graphics are still king.  Then again, the next generation of cards have come out, and the capabilities are better than ever.
